The Taking is the name given by West Enders to the day they receive eviction notices from Boston Redevelopment Authority announcing the agency would use its power of eminent domain to clear an area it called substandard and decadent. Demolition begins a few weeks later and is completed in March 1960. Many residents leave in June. A 1989 Massachusetts Institute of Technology study concludes, “What really happened to relocated families is hard to know because official information is so unreliable.” by March 1960.*
